Underprints are additional lines of text printed on the underside of the stamp after it has been produced. There are many designs with unique uses. For example some underprints are used as security features to prevent forgeries or to commemorate an annivarsary or an event.
Overprints are the same thing but printed on the face of the stamp, not the reverse side.
